Do I need a permit to build a fence in Baton Rouge?
In most cases, yes. East Baton Rouge Parish's Department of Development requires a fence and wall permit for fence installation, and requirements differ in Ascension, Livingston, and other parishes we serve. Rules can also vary by city, neighborhood, and HOA, so we always recommend confirming with your local parish permitting office and HOA before starting.
How far does my fence need to be from the property line?
Setback requirements vary by parish and HOA. In East Baton Rouge Parish, for example, fences generally need to be set back at least 15 feet from the edge of a street and at least 5 feet from side or rear property lines, and cannot be built inside a drainage, utility, or other servitude without written consent from the servitude holder. Ascension, Livingston, and other parishes we serve may have different rules. Is there a height limit on my fence?
Height limits depend on where the fence sits on your property and your zoning. Front and corner side yards typically have lower height limits, and above 4 feet in those areas, fences generally must be at least 70% transparent (no more than 30% solid).
